The Jordanian monarch King Abdullah II on Monday stressed the need to preserve the historic and legal status quo in Al-Quds Al-Sharif, and not to harm it, warning of "negative consequences for the region as a whole" if this situation changes.
During his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, King Abdullah reiterated Jordan's continued protection of the holy sites in the city through working with the international community and in all forums, according to a statement issued by the Royal Court.
The King stressed Jordan's full support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and their support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
During the talks, they stressed the importance of working with the US administration to move the peace process forward and re-launch serious and effective negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis based on the two-state solution.
King Abdullah called for the commitment of US President Donald Trump to work for peace between Palestinians and Israelis, stressing the importance of intensifying efforts to find real political prospects for progress towards resolving the conflict.
For his part, President Abbas expressed his appreciation for Jordan's efforts in supporting the rights and just cause of the Palestinian people in various international forums.
President Abbas praised the fundamental role of the Kingdom in re-opening the Al-Aqsa mosque and the holy Haram Al-Sharif in full, and defusing the recent crisis, stressing the importance of the Hashemite guardianship over the Islamic and Christian sanctuaries in Jerusalem.
