ERBIL — Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi did not attend a funeral for late Secretary General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and former President Jalal Talabani, neither in Kurdistan Region nor in Baghdad.

Talabani’s body arrived in Sulaymaniyah on 6th of October from Germany, but Abadi declined to attend the burial ceremony even though it was attended by most of senior officials from Baghdad and Erbil.

During the burial, Talabani’s coffin was wrapped with Kurdistan's flag and not Iraq’s. The move angered some officials in the central government and several Iraqi News Channels announced that they will not cover the ceremony because of Kurdistan's flag.

However, the Iraqi premier was believed to take part in another funeral in Baghdad which was hosted by Iraqi President Fuad Masum on Monday, but he did not.

His reluctance is believed to be related to the recent political disputes between Erbil and Baghdad over Kurdistan Region’s September independence vote.
