[ltr]Russia vetoed the UN Security Council on Tuesday to prevent the renewal of a mandate to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria.[/ltr]
[ltr]The investigation, conducted by the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), known as the Joint Investigation Mechanism, is unanimously approved by the 15 UN Security Council states in 2015 and renewed in 2016.[/ltr]
[ltr]China abstained while Bolivia joined Russia in rejecting the renewal while 11 voted in favor.[/ltr]
[ltr]Russia, before using the veto, said it would not allow the Security Council to renew its mandate to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria[/ltr]
