Israel has refused to allow an American employee of Amnesty International to enter its territory, according to officials announced on Wednesday.

Israel justified the move as part of a controversial effort to prevent activists who support boycotting the Jewish state because of its occupation of Palestinian land.

"Raed Jarrar, advocacy director for Middle East and North Africa at the United States branch of the organization, was barred from entering the occupied West Bank on Monday," Amnesty International and Israeli officials said.

A spokeswoman for the Israeli Interior Ministry said that "the office of the Minister of Internal Security Gilad Erdan recommended that the entry of Jarrar, against the backdrop of the movement of boycotts and divestment and sanctions on Israel."

"The refusal to enter Jarrar apparently comes in retaliation against the organization for its human rights work," Amnesty International said.

Jarrar, a Palestinian, was arrested at the crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank while on a personal visit to his family after the death of his father, Amnesty said.

"The fact that Raed Jarrar was prevented from entering after his investigation into his work at Amnesty International," he said, "was taken in retaliation for the organization's work on human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories."

Last March, the Israeli parliament passed a law banning all foreigners supporting Israel's boycott of the Jewish state.

Israel's boycott, divestment and sanctions movement (BDS) is working on an international level for the economic, cultural and academic boycott of the Jewish state and demands an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories for 50 years.
