    The Foreign Relations Committee on Saturday revealed a sharp shortage of the Iraqi diplomatic corps, confirming the presence of 30 diplomatic missions out of 80, which are still without ambassadors.
    "There is a severe shortage of Iraqi ambassadors," MP Hilal al-Sahlani said in a statement seen by al-Mada. He pointed out that "the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working on this file because the Iraqi relations with the regional environment and the international community is expanding and open in the wake of the great victory over the terrorist." 
    "We have more than 80 missions outside Iraq and the number of ambassadors currently working is less than 50, so the government has resorted to assigning a head of mission instead of an ambassador, as well as reducing representation in other countries not represented by an ambassador in Baghdad," he said. 
    "The mechanism of appointing Iraqi ambassadors is a very complex mechanism as a deputy minister, where it passes through four stages, first interview and nomination from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then a decision of the Council of Ministers followed by a vote within the House of Representatives and then a presidential decree of the President of the Republic.
    A member of the Foreign Relations Committee said that "this mechanism is not approved even in the United States, which is limited to the approval of a committee of the US Congress, or the approval of the Council of Ministers with the President of the Republic in other countries." 
    The Sahlani that "the parliamentary committee is waiting to nominate new ambassadors to fill vacant positions in the missions and representatives of Iraq during the coming period." 
    In a related context, Iraq asked Russia, Turkey and Iran to participate in the negotiations (Astana) related to the Syrian crisis. 
    The Iraqi ambassador in Ankara, Hisham al-Alawi, said in a press statement briefed by the (range) yesterday, Baghdad is currently waiting for the official response, and it intends to participate in future meetings in order to play an active role in the search for a solution to the Syrian crisis. 
    Al-Alawi felt that the Sochi summit would reduce tension in Syria and prepare the necessary atmosphere to stop the crisis politically.
