Russia rejects Washington's call to cut off diplomatic ties with Pyongyang
Russia on Thursday rejected a US call to cut diplomatic and trade ties with North Korea after it launched an intercontinental ballistic missile and accused Washington of trying to "provoke" Pyongyang.
"We have repeatedly stressed that the pressure of sanctions has been exhausted and that all these resolutions that imposed sanctions provide for the resumption of a political process and a return to negotiations," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in the Belarusian capital of Minsk.
The minister said: "The Americans ignore this demand, it is a serious mistake."
"The recent moves by the United States deliberately aim to provoke Pyongyang to do hard work," he said. "Everything seems to have been done to make sure that Kim Jong-un deviates."
The United States, after Pyongyang's missile test early Wednesday, called on all countries to sever diplomatic and trade ties with North Korea.
"It is no easier to break all relations with North Korea, but the actual issue is how to resolve the crisis on the Korean Peninsula," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
"We must focus our joint efforts on seeking a response to this issue," he said.
Washington also vowed to "destroy" the North Korean regime completely in the event of a war, "its ambassador to the United Nations, Nikke Hailey, during an emergency session of the Security Council discussed the North Korean file.
"The Americans should explain to each of us what they are trying to do, if they want to find an excuse to destroy North Korea, so let them take it directly, and the American leadership will confirm it," Lavrov said.
Russia and China call for dialogue with North Korea on the basis of a road map to be determined by the two capitals. Finished
