[ltr]NATO members on Wednesday extended the mandate of Jens Stoltenberg as secretary-general of NATO until late 2020 to give the former Norwegian prime minister a rare mandate for six years.[/ltr]
[ltr]Stoltenberg took office on October 1, 2014 and will expire on September 30, 2020, two years after the scheduled date, after receiving strong support from Germany and the United States, the dominant force in the alliance, which welcomed his efforts to increase defense spending in Europe.[/ltr]
[ltr]French President Emmanuel Macaron and British Prime Minister Theresa May Stoltenberg congratulated the French President.[/ltr]
[ltr]If the 58-year-old Stoltenberg completes his tenure as NATO's top civilian, he will be his first secretary-general to serve six years since German Manfred Werner, who died in 1994.[/ltr]
[ltr]The position has always gone to a European figure, and at a time when Trump's administration differs with many of its allies on a number of foreign policy issues, many see Stoltenberg as a skilled manager capable of building consensus.[/ltr]
