An informed source revealed, today, Wednesday (October 16, 2024), that the White House has adopted a hotline with its embassy in Baghdad in preparation for indirect negotiations with Tehran.
The source said, "Washington is serious about conducting undeclared negotiations with Tehran in Baghdad, and there is a hotline with the White House to provide the latest updates," expecting that "movement in this direction will start within 48 hours in light of the presence of an American delegation in the capital."
He added, "The US embassy is in constant movement and its diplomatic delegations are holding meetings with Iraqi elites on an ongoing basis, some of which are not announced, in the context of pushing the movement towards negotiations, even if they are indirect, but the most important thing is to listen to the opinion of the other party and try to send more messages."
He pointed out that "Iran has shown particular flexibility over the past 24 hours, but it is cautious, especially since Tehran believes that Washington is an unserious negotiator and does not trust its commitments."
The source concluded, "The efforts of the Iraqi parties are continuing to create an initial atmosphere to start indirect negotiations."
3 Iraqi elites on the mediation line
An informed source revealed that three Iraqi elites have entered into indirect mediation between Tehran and Washington to ease tensions in the Middle East.
The source explained, on Tuesday (October 15, 2024), that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who recently visited Baghdad, held unannounced meetings with Iraqi elites to inform them of his country’s position and what his government’s reaction is to the efforts to create unannounced negotiations between Tehran and Washington and what its messages are directly.”
He pointed out that "Tehran does not trust Washington and its promises of calm, especially after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, stressing that "Washington called on Tehran not to respond and promised to stop the war in Gaza and prevent the situation from worsening in Lebanon, but what happened was the opposite of all promises, noting that America was trying to buy time and turn a blind eye to what the occupying entity was doing, leading to the assassination of Nasrallah."
The source explained that "Iran has reached the conviction that the policy of self-restraint and continuing with American promises is useless, because whenever there is hesitation or self-restraint, its repercussions are extremely negative. Therefore, Tehran's position was strict that any promises made must be actually implemented before sitting at the table."
The source confirmed that "America, through multiple messages, wanted to know Tehran's position if Tel Aviv launched strikes against it and how it would respond."
He added, "Washington does not support striking nuclear reactors, oil and gas facilities, or decision-making centers, and considers it to be pouring oil on the fire, and that it will be the most affected by any step in this direction, even the Gulf states do not support such an escalation."
The source added, "The Iraqi elites are now trying to crystallize a movement regarding undeclared negotiations, but the matter is facing many complications, especially since the nature of the occupying entity's response is unknown until this moment and perhaps it is what determines the options for the next stage."
