    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Environment revealed, on Thursday, the proposals of the committee formed by order of the Prime Minister to address the pollution file, while indicating a move to transform the Dora refinery into an environmentally friendly facility.
Director General of Environmental Protection and Improvement in the Middle Euphrates Region, Sinan Jaafar Mohammed, said in a statement reported by the official news agency and reviewed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that "the committee presented a set of proposals in coordination between the Ministries of Environment and Oil and the Baghdad Municipality, as well as the Ministry of Electricity to address the pollution file in the country."

He explained that "the proposals included improving the quality of fuel, reducing its sulfur content, addressing environmental violations and activities carried out outside the law and environmental determinants, establishing new sites for sanitary landfills and projects to recycle waste and solid waste and launching waste-to-energy projects, i.e. converting solid waste into energy, in addition to the proposal to transfer the Dora refinery, improve its performance and efficiency and transform it into an environmentally friendly refinery."

He pointed out that "there are a set of quick and immediate treatments that the Ministry of Environment has begun to take, such as removing violations that were previously documented by the Ministry of Environment and required an executive force provided by the Ministry of Interior through various security agencies under the direction of the Prime Minister as one of the outcomes of the committee's work."

He pointed out that "the government has begun launching investment opportunities to convert solid waste into energy, as it has granted a license and approval to establish a project in Nahrawan in addition to other projects on the Karkh side."

He pointed out that "the government's efforts to eliminate the burning of associated gas by 2028, which enhances investment opportunities in this field."

Last Saturday, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani directed the formation of a committee to study the state of pollution and the recurrence of the sulfur smell prevalent in Baghdad and neighboring governorates.
