    Economy News - Baghdad
The Parliamentary Services and Reconstruction Committee revealed, on Wednesday, the existence of many proposals for waste management in the country, while indicating that approximately 80% or more of waste landfill sites do not have environmental approvals.
Committee member Haider Shaikhan said that the committee has several proposals regarding waste sector management, including developing waste management and circular economy programs to enhance innovation, training, research, development and investment, and working to establish hazardous waste treatment and landfill sites, increase investment opportunities and generate economic returns from them.
He pointed out that "the committee proposed developing the infrastructure for municipal solid waste and establishing sanitary landfill sites to reduce pollution and promote recycling, developing a joint roadmap between the public and private sectors to reduce the use of single-use plastics at the domestic and commercial levels, and conducting a market assessment and feasibility study to identify potential projects and programs to invest in organic waste."
He stressed the "need to develop a basic study and roadmap for the transition towards green jobs in the waste sector, develop and implement a national policy and regulations for managing construction and demolition waste, and design and implement national awareness campaigns on waste management."
Sheikhan explained that "the number of municipal service institutions in Iraq increased in 2020 to reach (256) institutions, compared to the baseline in 2017, in which the number of institutions reached (251), and thus the percentage of those served by municipal waste collection reached (61.9%) and (64.6%) in rural areas, and (87.7%) and (89.9%) in urban areas for the years (2017) and (2020) respectively."
He added, "The average amount of waste generated per person amounted to approximately (1.5) kg per day, an increase of (25%) in the year (2020) over the base year (2017), and statistics indicate that the amount of regular waste that was lifted and transported to sanitary landfill sites was approximately (20.37) and (19.7) million tons annually during the years (2017) and (2020) respectively."
He pointed out that burial in sites that do not have environmental approvals is the most widely used method for disposing of municipal waste, and sites that have environmental approvals constitute 28% of the total number of sanitary landfill sites. As for the transfer stations, the total number has reached 87 transfer stations spread across all Iraqi governorates, only 14 of which have environmental approvals.
The committee member noted that, "According to 2020 statistics, there are two waste sorting and recycling plants in Iraq, as the data indicates that 11,495 tons of regular waste were recycled during 2020, which constitutes a very small percentage when compared to what was transferred to landfill sites (19.7) million tons."
