    [ltr]The governor of the state of Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil, Robinson Faria, Saturday declared a state of emergency in the state after a police strike and an escalation of violence.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"The Governor of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Robinson Faria, declared a state of emergency in the state for 180 days, according to a decree issued by him," the Brazilian media reported.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"We have taken into account the increased level of violence resulting from paralysis of police activities, according to the statistics office and the General Secretariat for Public Security and Social Defense," Faria told the media.[/ltr]
    [ltr]On Tuesday (19 December 2017), state police and firefighters declared an open strike to demand better working conditions and pay their salaries on a regular basis.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The governor announced on Saturday (December 30, 2017) the handover of police duties to the army by decree, in order to maintain security, according to an army statement.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Following the strike, incidents of robbery, looting and killings in the state were markedly high, with the federal government sending 2,800 military personnel to the state for security.[/ltr]
