UN Security Council welcomes inter-Korean talks
The UN Security Council welcomed the inter-Korean talks, the first in more than two years, and hoped the move would pave the way for making the Korean Peninsula nuclear-free.
"The Security Council welcomes the steps and contacts between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK)," Kazakhstan's ambassador to the United Nations Khairat Umarov, whose country holds the monthly presidency of the Security Council, said in a press statement.
"Council members have indicated that a preliminary dialogue between the two Koreas could open up possibilities for building confidence on the Korean Peninsula to reduce tensions and reach nuclear disarmament," he said.
"Members of the Council express the hope that this interaction will lead to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," he said.
