The first minister accused of corruption returned to Baghdad

    Baghdad / Range

The Iraqi authorities on Thursday handed over the former Minister of Commerce Abdul Falah al-Sudani, convicted of financial corruption cases of Interpol after his arrest in Beirut in September.
The Integrity Commission said in a statement issued by Al-Mada that "extraordinary efforts have been made by the Commission over several years in preparing and processing the files related to the recovery of the Sudanese convict, including the decisions of the sentences against him, the majority of which received the decisive degree."
The body pointed out that "the convict is wanted for the Iraqi judiciary in 9 cases and was sentenced to eight absentee sentences of imprisonment and severe imprisonment, against the background of deliberate damage to public money."
A government official told Agence France-Presse that "the former minister of trade arrived at Baghdad airport after receiving him from Interpol."
A source close to the government said that "the first official with the rank of minister comes hidden with an Iraqi officer and a detachment of international police."
"It is the first time that Interpol has responded to a government request at this level," he said.
This cooperation opens a new beginning after the meeting of Prime Minister Haider Abadi in Davos, INTERPOL President Gurgen Stoke.
"During the meeting, they discussed cooperation with Iraq to pursue organized crime and terrorism and those involved in corruption issues," the ministry said in a statement.
"INTERPOL's cooperation with Iraq in this area and it will soon visit Iraq to cooperate more closely with INTERPOL and Iraq," Stoke said.
The Sudanese authorities arrested al-Sudani at Beirut International Airport on the background of an arrest warrant issued by the International Police in September last year.
The Iraqi courts in 2012 sentenced in absentia to 7 years in jail for the Sudanese for administrative and financial corruption cases.
Al-Sudani was elected a member of the Iraqi National Assembly in 2005 in which Jaafari's government emerged.
Al-Sudani was chosen as minister of education in the government of Ibrahim al-Jaafari, and after the 2005 elections, al-Sudani was also elected to the position of minister of trade.
He took office in June 2006 with the formation of a new government headed by Maliki. He resigned in 2009 after being arrested at Baghdad airport while trying to leave the country, but was able to leave the country after being released on bail.
Al-Sudani's brothers were also arrested on charges of involvement in the cases in which the Sudanese minister was charged.
And condemned the Sudanese issues of importing ration card items contrary to the controls and laws and the established origin and the presence of excessive prices, in addition to issuing orders to receive damaged materials and other processing is not suitable for human consumption and change in contracts, and orders to stop the distribution of ration card items, which led to the delay and expiration of validity and damage.
He was also convicted of issuing other orders not to receive materials equipped to the ministry, as well as issuing orders not to comply with the instructions of the Council of Ministers, which led to damage to public money, according to the statement of the Integrity Commission.
