The UN Security Council resolution on May 31, 2024 was met with positive reactions from the Iraqi street, and specialists considered the completion of the mission of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) by the end of 2025 AD as evidence of the stability of the situation in Iraq and the government’s fulfillment of its promises.
The resolution that was adopted unanimously stipulates extending the mandate of the mission, which was established in 2003, “for a final period of 19 months until December 31, 2025.” It is known that the mission was established in 2003, and its mandate included supporting the government to conduct a comprehensive political dialogue. National reconciliation, organizing elections and reforming the security sector.
The political advisor to the Prime Minister, Fadi Al-Shammari, said: “Iraq achieved a historic achievement in ending the United Nations mission (UNAMI) through the Security Council’s vote to end the mission’s work,” and added that “this decision comes thanks to the tireless efforts and strategic vision of the Iraqi government.” Which strived hard to achieve national sovereignty and enhance Iraq's independence.
He pointed out, "Through this historic achievement, Iraq once again confirms its ability to achieve success and bear responsibility, and that our government is working seriously and with intense efforts to achieve a promising future based on a comprehensive development and urban vision."
In turn, political analyst Omar Al-Nasser said, in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “One of the most important positive reactions to Jeanine Plasschaert’s recent briefing is the withdrawal of the United Nations mission at an official request from Iraq, which is evidence of the stability of the situation and the government’s self-confidence in taking responsibility for the procedures.” “The future plan for the parliamentary elections, which includes within its folds everything that is consistent with international standards regarding societal security, peaceful coexistence, and the rest of the details related to supporting democracy, freedom of expression, and the peaceful transfer of power, and these are considered the first steps to empowering Iraqi sovereignty.”
Pointing out, “The process of ending the UNAMI mission in Iraq at the end of 2025 may be a real test for all political forces of their seriousness in highlighting the best aspect of the upcoming parliamentary elections, preserving the achievements achieved and avoiding conflicts and political disputes that may undermine the pillars of democracy.” After 21 years of change and the fall of the previous regime.”
For his part, the head of the Al-Sharq Center for Strategic Studies and Information, Ali Mahdi Al-Araji, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: “Twenty years were enough to understand and practice democratic work in Iraq, and I do not think today that we need international monitoring to interfere in Iraqi affairs, and perhaps I go explicitly to (Plasschaert’s intervention), which was not within the limits of the general protocol, but rather extended to interference in the drawing and political formation of the Iraqi party map, and this is considered outside the powers entrusted to it.”
He added, "The decision to end the work of (UNAMI) is a correct decision that is credited to the Sudanese government in light of the presence of more than 251 international observers working in (UNAMI) who are not subject to direct security oversight, and there is no authority capable of interfering in knowing the methodology and mechanism of their work." .
He continued: “Most of these parties can be considered actors of global intelligence or intelligence systems that operate in an international form and cover, and with regard to the security aspect, today in Iraq, thanks to the security levers, we are in strong control of matters and enjoy very clear security stability,” and he added: “Yes; There are penetrations, but they do not threaten the security and entity of the state and the citizen. Security breaches occur in the most powerful countries, and this is not considered a collapse or breakdown of the security system.”
