Israel ratified Thursday a law granting only Jews the right to self-determination in the country, which the Arab minority has described as racial and racist.
The Knesset voted by a majority of sixty-two votes in favor of the law after heated debates continued since Wednesday afternoon, and began voting itself late at night.
The new law states that "Israel is the historical homeland of the Jewish nation and that only this nation has the right to national self-determination."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the move as a "decisive moment".
It also provides for the establishment of Jewish communities only, and emphasizes that Jerusalem as its capital is the eternal capital of Israel.
The law repeats Arabic as the second official language in Israel, considering that Hebrew is the official language of the state.
Members of the Israeli opposition Knesset described the law as aimed at harming the rights of Israeli Arabs.
Israeli Arabs have equal rights under the law, but have long complained of being treated as second-class citizens and say they face discrimination and poor services such as education, health and housing.
"It is a death for democracy," said Ahmed Tibi, a lawmaker in the Knesset.
"This law is an attempt to perpetuate racial superiority by promoting racist policies," said Adalah, a non-governmental organization concerned with the rights of Israeli Arabs.
Last week, Netanyahu defended the law, saying, "We will maintain the guarantee of civil rights in Israel's democracy, but the majority also has rights and decides the majority."
