[rtl]WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump, who threatened to "destroy" the Turkish economy in the event of Ankara taking action not on Washington's wishes, retreated from his remarks, citing economic potential as "great" for cooperation with Turkey.[/rtl]
[rtl]"I spoke to President Erdogan to advise on our position on all issues, including the successes of the last two weeks in fighting the rest of the terrorist organization and establishing a safe 20-mile zone in Syria," Trump said in a tweet on Twitter. "He said.[/rtl]
[rtl]"We also talked about economic development between the United States and Turkey," he said. "We have tremendous potential to strengthen and expand."[/rtl]
[rtl]Relations between Ankara and Washington have been strained after Trump vowed to "destroy Turkey economically" if it attacked Kurdish fighters who control Manbaj and other parts of Syria after the US withdrawal.[/rtl]
[rtl]On Sunday, the US president proposed a safe area of 20 miles inside Syria.[/rtl]
[rtl]Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said earlier that Ankara was ready to launch a military operation in eastern Euphrates, as well as in the Syrian Manbeg against the Kurds. And then decided to postpone it after a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, on 14 December last.[/rtl]
[rtl]These developments come in the wake of Trump's decision on December 19, when he announced the withdrawal of US troops from Syria, without setting a date.[/rtl]
