Gold settles after Trump's speech fueled fears of a government shutdown

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Gold prices stabilized on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump pledged in his State of the Union speech to build a border wall while providing little explanation for ongoing trade talks with China, but the dollar's rise prevented earnings from the metal.
Spot gold prices settled at $ 1314.30 an ounce by 0546 GMT.
US gold futures also settled at $ 1318.20 an ounce.
Trump, speaking in the House of Representatives in the face of a political row over his demand, told Democrats to end their opposition to funding a border wall he says is necessary to prevent illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Trump's $ 5.7 billion request for a wall on the Mexican border caused a partial 35-day closure of the government that ended on Jan. 25. Trump threatened to resume it if he was not satisfied with the progress of the negotiations.
The dollar index has stabilized near a two-week high.

Silver fell 0.3 percent to $ 15.79 an ounce, while platinum fell 0.1 percent to $ 815.
