The US Department of Commerce said it has listed several Chinese companies and a state-owned institute to produce supercomputers with military applications for entities on its national security list that prohibit it from buying US parts and components without government approval.
The export restrictions announced on Friday by adding companies to what is effectively a black list of trade are the latest push by the Bush administration to limit Chinese companies' ability to access US technology in the wake of the US-Beijing trade war.
The ministry added that it added Sugun, Wuxi Jiangnan Computing Technology Institute, Higgun, Chengdu Haiguang Integrated Serket and Chengdu Haiguang Microelectronics along with several units of the five entities of the list, due to concerns about military applications of its giant computers.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, Wuxi Jiangnan Computing Technology Institute belongs to the Research Institute of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), adding that its mission is to contribute to the modernization of the Chinese army.
The Commerce Department said companies "pose a significant threat of being or becoming involved in activities that run counter to national security and foreign policy interests of the United States."
In May, Trump Huawei Technologies added the list and 68 units in more than 24 countries. US President Donald Trump said the United States could settle complaints about Huawei as part of a trade deal
