US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday expressed dismay at a series of missile tests by North Korea but expressed a desire to resume negotiations with Pyongyang on denuclearization on the Korean peninsula.
In an interview with CBS, Pompeo cited the six tests of North Korea's medium-range missiles in recent weeks.
"I hope it doesn't take place," Pompeo said, referring to the tests.
He said he hoped North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would agree to resume negotiations after three face-to-face meetings with Trump.
"We did not return to the negotiating table as quickly as we had hoped ... We were clear all the time. We know there will be obstacles on the way."
He said Stephen Pigeon, the State Department's special representative for North Korea negotiations, was in Asia this week.
"We hope that Kim will come to the negotiating table and get better results," Pompeo said.
