BAGHDAD (AFP) - A senior official in the energy sector revealed the implementation of a pilot pumping of oil into the main pipeline linking the Kirkuk oil fields with the city of Haditha for the first time in five years.
The official, who declined to be named, said in a press statement that "the aim of the experimental pumping is to determine the levels of damage and other technical problems in the body of the pipe, in a move that was interpreted as part of the steps to implement an oil agreement between Iraq and Jordan, concluded at a time Earlier this year, a pipeline from Basra to the port of Aqaba to export Iraqi crude with a capacity of about one million barrels per day.
This comes nearly two weeks after the Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Hala Zawati, announced the arrival of the first shipment of crude oil exported from Iraq to Jordan, by 10,000 barrels of land over the border under the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries last February, praising the efforts Iraq, which resulted in the completion of this important part of cooperation in the field of energy between the two sides thanks to the interest and support of the leaderships of the two countries.
According to the Iraqi official, "the North Oil Company in Kirkuk recently, a test pump in the pipeline from Kirkuk passing through the city of Baiji to the city of modern, at the station {K3} west of the country to see the current problems in the pipeline and maintenance," adding that "this process is underway For the first time in more than five years, the company stopped supplying oil to the pipeline through the pipeline because of ISIS's takeover of Anbar province in 2014. ”
The official added, "The pumping was to assess the pipeline's oil and to know the damage, and found that it is not large and the experimental pumping process succeeded and we identified the status of the line and its carrying capacity, to transport oil," pointing out that "the pipeline is ready to work within Iraqi pipeline network, and at another stage will determine whether to enter the project to export Iraqi oil from Basra to Aqaba, Jordan. "
At the same time, specialists in the oil sector in Iraq that the step is important to complete the pipeline, which depends on both Baghdad and Amman a lot to create a new export port for Iraq away from Turkey and the ports of Basra on the Gulf of security confusion.
According to experts, Jordan will ensure a continuous supply of oil for domestic consumption, as it will reduce the time allocated to complete the project as well as the financial cost, without the need to build a new pipeline at this distance of about 430 km.
Observers confirm that the capacity of the pipeline does not exceed a quarter of a million barrels while the agreement with Jordan is one million barrels per day, excluding that the test pump has to do with the oil project with Jordan at the present time unless there is an expansion plan or considered as a line of several lines to be established to his side.
The economist Ali Khalil said that "the pipeline is one of the important oil pipelines in western Iraq, but pumping oil from Kirkuk through it only means testing it, as the agreement with Jordan requires that the linkage of the Basra oil fields in the south of the country and not Kirkuk fields North.
he adds , "most of Iraq 's cities served by lines of oil medium and large capacity pumping oil in the pipeline could mean that it will be used within the Iraqi linkage Jordanian oil project or that it will return its previous function , which feed power plants and the unity of a small refinery in the city of Haditha in western Iraq oil.
The government approved the mid-year agreement to establish an oil pipeline with an estimated capacity of one million barrels per day with a length of more than 1700 km, and a final cost of up to $ 18 billion to transport oil from Basra on the waters of the Arabian Gulf in southern Iraq to the Jordanian port of Aqaba on the Red Sea.
Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi announced earlier in July that the Council of Ministers had approved the Iraqi-Jordanian oil pipeline project, stressing that any impediment to the export of oil through the Strait of Hormuz will affect the national economy, which depends on oil revenues, and that the Council The ministers are considering alternatives to find different and diverse paths in order to ensure the continuation of the flow of Iraqi oil exports in a smooth manner
