US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Iran's hardline cleric, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, feared his own citizens, stressing that Khamenei had killed 1,500 Iranians, in reference to the suppression of popular protests that began in mid-November due to the increase in gasoline prices.
Pompeo said in a tweet to him on his official Twitter account that "the Iranian people have the right to mourn the 1500 victims who were massacred by Khamenei during Iran's protests. The regime fears its citizens, and has again resorted to violence and the shutdown of the Internet."
The sudden rise in gasoline prices in Iran has led to large gatherings in many Iranian cities that have been severely suppressed by the security forces, while Amnesty International has said that more than 304 people have been killed in recent protests.
But last week, Reuters news agency quoted Iranian government sources as saying that "1,500 people were killed during the protests and that the Iranian leader ordered an end to the protests in any way."
The Iranian "Ilna" agency reported that the Internet was cut off last Wednesday in several Iranian provinces before invitations were sent through social media to commemorate the victims on the occasion of the forty days of protests.
