On Monday, the Ministry of Water Resources described the drying up of the Tigris River as "artificially", indicating that it would meet the water needs of rice and maize cultivation.
"The drought of the Tigris River is an artificial drop and not a natural one," the ministry’s advisor, Awni Dhiab Abdullah, said in a press interview.
He added, "Drinking water and watering the orchards are currently secured from the existing water. Wheat and barley are currently being harvested. Therefore, there is no need to lose water at the present time, as we are holding water for the summer agricultural plan."
Abdullah pointed out that "the decrease that occurred in the water is due to the lack of rain, which affected the general situation of water in Iraq, which made us hold water in dams and reservoirs," stressing that "there is sufficient storage in the Mosul Dam and the Tharthar Low."
Abdullah pointed out that "the water needs for agriculture will come in succession during the summer agricultural season, including rice cultivation in mid-June and the cultivation of yellow corn on the first of next July," stressing that "the stored water is sufficient for these agricultural crops."
It is noteworthy that the Tigris and Euphrates rivers are currently witnessing a significant decline in their waters due to the decrease in water imports from the source country of Turkey, in addition to the lack of water revenues from the tributaries that come from Iran.
