With Iraq nearing the completion of the full payment of Kuwait’s compensation, where only 12% of the original amount was left and about 88% of the amount was paid, Iranian voices began talking about the need for Iraq to start paying the Iranian war compensation, but the required amount is equivalent to Kuwait’s compensation by 20 times, or more Of Kuwait's compensation amounted to 96%.
It began with a report published by the Iranian press, which spoke of the need for Iran to demand Iraq compensation for the Eighty Years’ War, especially with Iraq heading to file a complaint with the international community about water, while the compensation was estimated at 1.1 trillion dollars (1100 billion dollars), a huge number equivalent to Iraq’s budget. For about 14 years.
After the press interviews, the matter officially moved to the Iranian parliament, where a member of the Iranian Parliament’s Energy Committee, Ali Reza Warnaseri, called on the Iraqi authorities to transfer the ownership of some oil wells to Tehran, as a fine to be paid in exchange for the losses of the Iran-Iraq war.
Entekhab quoted Warnasiri as saying that “Iraq should pay a war fine of $1100 billion,” adding that “Iran did not ask for the amount in the past to establish good-neighborly relations after the fall of Saddam.”
He added that "Kuwait received a fine for the Iraqi invasion of its lands by obtaining a share of Iraqi oil sales, and based on this experience, Iraq could transfer the ownership of a number of its oil wells to Iran."
He pointed out that "the United Nations, in its Resolution No. 598, recognized Iraq's responsibility for starting the war, and despite the lack of a mechanism in this resolution regarding paying the war fine, the Iranian government must follow up on this file."
Iraq ends 88% of Kuwait's compensation
And recently, Iraq paid a new payment to Kuwait in the amount of 490 million dollars, leaving only 629 million dollars owed by Iraq to complete the payment of Kuwait's compensation in full amounting to 52.4 billion dollars.
Where the embassy of Baghdad in Kuwait announced, in a statement yesterday, Monday, that "Iraq paid last Tuesday 490 million dollars of the compensation amounts determined by the United Nations Compensation Committee as a result of the ousted regime's invasion of the State of Kuwait in the early nineties of the last century."
The statement indicated that "Iraq will work to pay the remaining amount of compensation, estimated at about 629 million dollars, at the beginning of next year 2022."
In 1991, a UN Compensation Committee was formed, obligating Baghdad to pay $52.4 billion in compensation to individuals, companies, governmental organizations and others, who incurred losses resulting directly from the invasion and occupation of Kuwait.
Iraq had stopped making payments in 2014 during the war on ISIS, which controlled a third of the country, but it resumed in 2018.
Iraq pays the amount of compensation to a UN fund established under the name of the United Nations Compensation Fund.
