Erbil Governor Omid Khoshnaw expressed, this evening, Tuesday, his dissatisfaction with the Iraqi federal government's estimate of the damages caused by torrential rains and floods in Erbil at only two billion Iraqi dinars, while the actual damage caused by the floods is estimated at about 21 billion dinars.
The governor of Erbil said in a statement, "After the disaster that occurred last Friday due to the floods and torrential rains that hit Erbil, the amount of material damage was great, in addition to the public sector losses, citizens' losses amounted to about 20 to 21 billion dinars, so we submitted a request to the government." The Iraqi federal government to assist the affected as a legal right from the monthly emergency budget, which is deducted monthly from the budget of the Kurdistan Region, but unfortunately, it was decided today in a meeting of the Iraqi Federal Council of Ministers, to send only two billion dinars to Erbil.
He pointed out that «the decision of the federal government was not at the level expected of it compared to the extent of the damage caused by the natural disaster that struck the city, therefore, in addition to our strong dissatisfaction with the decision of the Iraqi Council of Ministers, we affirm that the decision is not at all at the level of expectations and the extent of damage».
The Governor of Erbil stressed by saying: “We announce our rejection of this amount and we will not accept it at all, and we affirm our disappointment with the Iraqi government’s handling, and we demand the Federal Council of Ministers to review its decision, because we demand our legal rights that are deducted monthly under the name of sovereign spending from the budget of the Kurdistan Region, and now they have to return it.”
And earlier this evening, the Iraqi government decided to allocate two billion dinars to support the Kurdistan Regional Government in the face of torrential rains and floods.
Erbil witnessed this week floods caused by heavy rains, killing 12 people and causing extensive material damage. The Kurdistan Regional Government estimated the material losses at 21 billion dinars.
And the Iraqi Council of Ministers said in a statement, that it was decided during today's session, "the Ministry of Finance allocates an amount of 2 billion dinars to the Kurdistan Regional Government to face the floods."
The amount was allocated from the contingency reserve for the fiscal year 2021.
