Yesterday, Wednesday, the Minister in charge of Electricity Management, Adel Karim, revealed that there is a shortage of electric power of up to 15,000 megawatts throughout Iraq, pointing out that this prevents the supply of electricity to citizens for 24 hours.
Karim said during a press conference from Basra, which was followed by (Al-Mada), that "providing the required amount of electric power production requires financial support from the ministries of planning and finance."
He spoke about the need for fuel subsidy by the Ministry of Oil. If this support was provided from last summer to next summer, the ministry would have provided an additional 7,000 megawatts to the national grid.
Karim continued, "Iraq currently needs 15,000 megawatts of electricity, and this figure is difficult to reach due to the financial scarcity, so it is possible to add four thousand or five thousand megawatts during the next year, which will achieve remarkable stability in the hours of supplying the electricity."
He pointed out that "the ministry's plan was to provide 50,000 megawatts during the next four or five years in the event that financial support and the Ministry of Oil support with fuel."
And he indicated that "the ministry has taken a set of measures that would raise the production ceiling, such as linking with some countries, in addition to solar energy projects with Total to produce 1,000 megawatts in Basra, in addition to the governorates of Dhi Qar, Muthanna and Maysan."
With regard to providing fuel to operate electric power plants, Karim said, “This issue is the responsibility of the Ministry of Oil, and it has an ambitious plan through the Total contract to provide 600 mills sufficient to operate from 2,000 to 2,500 megawatts, as well as increase gas production capacities by 1,000 milliwatts, which will provide an additional 4,000 megawatts, as well as As for investing the Mansourieh gas field, it will provide additional energy to the national grid.”
In his speech, Karim touched on the announcement of the government's support for the development of clean energy, saying that "the evidence of the government's support for this type of electric energy is the approval of the establishment of 12,000 megawatts," explaining that "10% of the energy produced will be through clean energy during the coming period."
