Shafaq News/ Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, announced on Saturday that the country's energy needs have reached nearly 50,000 megawatts.
The Minister of Electricity said in a press conference held today in Najaf, "Our production this summer reached 27.55 thousand megawatts, a number recorded for the first time in Iraq."
He added, "But due to excessive energy consumption, Iraq's need for energy has reached approximately 48,000 megawatts."
In July 2023, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed that the measures taken by the government had resulted in bringing electricity production to 26,000 megawatts, the highest production in the country’s history.
Iraq has been suffering from a chronic electricity shortage crisis for decades, due to the blockade and successive wars. For many years, residents have been protesting the frequent power outages, especially during the summer, when temperatures sometimes reach 50 degrees Celsius.
