Al-Harir and Ain Al-Assad without Americans, and the factions will not surrender weapons!
Baghdad / Tamim Al-Hassan
It is likely that the influence of the armed factions and the “ISIS” will increase alike, following the recent government announcements of the complete withdrawal of US forces from the country. Some factions operating under the name of "resistance" were supposed to fulfill their promises to attack Washington's forces on Christmas Eve after 8 days.
Some political parties are skeptical about the possibility of "disarming" the factions after the justification for their presence has disappeared, while Washington may keep monitoring these groups from outside the borders.
And the government announced, last Tuesday, the end of the withdrawal of combat forces of the international coalition, from all the bases it occupied.
This is after 4 rounds of dialogue over the past months, which resulted in an agreement to keep only military advisors to support the Iraqi forces.
Opening the door to armed groups
And political parties supporting Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi believe that "the withdrawal will release the hand of the factions to control and dominate the state's capabilities more."
The factions and some forces close to those groups had adopted two contradictory positions regarding the news of the reduction of US forces.
Some positions welcomed the announcement of a reduction in the number of forces, while others said that they would continue to target US forces even if they were present in an “advisory” capacity.
There are more than 100,000 armed men in the country who are affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Forces, and some of the leaders of these factions have been placed under the terms of US sanctions.
The spokesman for the Joint Operations Command, Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji, said in a statement to the official channel that “a delegation from the Supreme Security Committee visited today (last Tuesday) the Harir base in Erbil; To see the withdrawal of combat forces from the base, and it was confirmed in the presence of the media that there were no combat forces left at the base.”
He added that "two days ago, the agreement was implemented at Ain al-Assad base in Anbar province, and also there were no combat forces left," noting that "the remaining advisors at Ain al-Assad base do not exceed (9) advisors, and they were present in front of the media.
The official pointed out that "the main task of the advisers is to provide advice to the Iraqi forces in the fight against terrorism, and air support, if we so request."
He stressed that "Iraq has reached the point of logistical support and how to deliver and equip Iraqi forces."
The ISIS stalker
In a statement to Al-Mada, the pro-government political parties, who preferred not to publish their identity, said that "it is not only the factions that threaten the country if the US forces leave, but there is also ISIS."
In the past few weeks, the organization launched a series of violent attacks in the joint areas between the borders of the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government, which left more than 60 dead and wounded, and occupied the first village after 2017 (declaring victory over ISIS) for several hours.
One soldier!
In turn, former MP Mithal Al-Alusi believes that the presence of one soldier or 100 means that the US forces are present in Iraq, "even if they have one employee."
A few days ago, officials in the US Central Command of the Army confirmed that their forces currently in Iraq, numbering 2,500, will remain there for the "foreseeable future."
Al-Alusi added, in connection with (Al-Mada): "America will not give up its interests easily and will continue to defend its children and its security from anywhere."
There are 45 US bases in the region, including in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and Bahrain, with about 80,000 soldiers, and they can be used to protect Iraq.
Do factions give up weapons?
On the other hand, Al-Alusi, the leader of the Umma Party, confirms that the armed factions "will not give up their weapons if the American combat forces leave Iraq, because the decision of these groups is in the hands of Tehran."
The former deputy assumes that “Tehran has not finished its combat operations against the American forces, neither in Syria, nor in Lebanon, nor even in Iraq.”
Last week, Akram al-Kaabi, the Secretary-General of the Nujaba Movement - one of the PMF factions - confirmed that he "does not believe the American promise to withdraw from the country by the end of this year."
Al-Kaabi added, according to what was quoted by Iranian news agencies, during a meeting that they described as taking place with leaders of eight "resistance factions", that "the resistance considers its weapon sacred and will never give up on it."
Armed groups under the name "Fateh Khaybar Brigade" had announced last week, confronting the Americans, a day before two missiles fell on the Green Zone.
Between rationality and Tehran's agenda
In addition, Ghazi Faisal, a researcher in political and security affairs, separates the problem of the presence of US and foreign forces in Iraq into two axes:
The first is the government's dealings with the international coalition and the US forces, describing it as "rational" and taking into account Iraq's political, security and economic interests, and the other is the role of the factions and Iran.
Faisal, who is the director of the Iraqi Center for Strategic Studies, said in an interview with (Al-Mada) that "the United States and NATO worked to equip and train the Iraqi forces, and they also maintain cultural and economic relations with Iraq."
Faisal confirmed that "the US forces will keep 2,500 soldiers in an advisory capacity and carry out the tasks of monitoring and supporting the air force and border control, and may intervene in the fighting if the Iraqi government requests."
As for the problem that the political researcher sees, “there is an Iranian agenda in the region, including Iraq, under the name of the global Islamic resistance, and it is being passed in the country through a number of its arms.”
Faisal predicts that these arms will "continue to confront the American forces," expecting their collapse as "al-Qaeda and ISIS, which are similar to the Iranian idea of forming an Islamic government."
Faisal points out that the continuation of these confrontations "will waste great opportunities for progress and development for Iraq and other countries such as Lebanon and Yemen.
