    The Ministry of Construction and Housing announced, on Monday, the start of a major campaign to rehabilitate 2,000 kilometers of inter-provincial roads, and to maintain 20 damaged bridges.
    The Director of Roads and Bridges at the ministry, Hussein Jassem Kazem, said in a statement seen by (the information), that "the department has started implementing its plan to rehabilitate damaged roads and bridges in all governorates, after stopping their maintenance more than eight years ago."
    Kazem added, "The plan lasted for three years, and targeted the main damaged roads linking the governorates with a length of approximately 2000 km, as well as the maintenance of 20 bridges and 39 intersections," noting that "the department started the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Mahmoudiyah Extension Road in Baghdad, and Al-Hur - Kamaliah and Kut - Al-Amarah is within the administrative borders of Wasit Governorate, as well as Al-Diwaniyah - Najaf and the Baghdad-Karbala road, with a length of 80 km.
    He pointed out that "work continues to rehabilitate some bridges, namely the Tigris arm in Baghdad, the concrete greens in the Muthanna governorate, and Karmat Ali in Basra, in addition to following up on the completion of the administrative procedures for some other bridges for the purpose of rehabilitating them sequentially according to their importance and the damage incurred and according to the specified time."
    Kazem pointed out that "the maintenance of the longest road, which is Baghdad - Kirkuk, is 400 km long and has two corridors back and forth, starting from the borders of the Baghdad Municipality and ending in the municipality of Kirkuk. And its furnishing, with the organization of security checkpoints, and the maintenance of bridges and arches along the road,” noting that “the continuation of the implementation of the rehabilitation plan depends on two factors, namely the provision of investment allocations for the department, and the supply of asbestos by the Ministry of Oil.” finished/25
