The Ministry of Commerce confirmed, on Tuesday, that it had taken urgent measures to provide strategic reserves of wheat, revealing that it had obtained the approval of the Prime Minister to buy two million tons of wheat.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, Muhammad Hanoun, said, "The ministry put forward several proposals during the meeting headed by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, which was aimed at developing plans to achieve food security, including the lawsuit that imported more than two million tons of wheat," confirming "obtaining approval to buy quantities of wheat.
Hanoun added, "Iraq is facing a major crisis as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, so a good stockpile of wheat must be prepared, in anticipation of the extension of the crisis, in addition to studying the process of supporting the food basket project through new allocations from the Ministry of Finance, because the exchange approval is one to 12, It caused major problems, so we obtained approvals to exclude the instructions of government contracts, in addition to obtaining approval for financial allocations to purchase wheat.”
Hanoun added in an interview with the official news agency, Mawazine News, that "there are offers from international companies to import wheat, and we hope that during the next two days, the offer will be made, and storage is provided through a contract that reaches four hundred thousand tons."
