The head of the Iraqi government, Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, announced the confiscation of one million, 781 and 971 liters of oil derivatives, in addition to the confiscation of 66 tanks, in the latest outcome of the dismantling of smuggling networks in a number of Iraqi governorates.
This came in a press conference held by Al-Sudani on Monday evening, during which he confirmed the existence of a network of those involved in smuggling operations from among the employees of the security services who facilitated smuggling operations in Baghdad, Basra, Diyala and Kirkuk.
He added, "The security forces have so far arrested 18 suspects, and there are 14 others who are still on the run, and they are members of the security services. As for the civilians involved, they number about 121 suspects."
Regarding the quantities of smuggled oil derivatives, which caused a crisis inside cities, Al-Sudani said, “In Basra governorate alone, about 5.6 million liters were smuggled daily, and in Diyala governorate about 2 million liters per day.”
"These smuggled oil derivatives are subsidized by the public treasury," he added.
In a separate context, and with regard to judicial procedures related to the theft of tax guarantees, Al-Sudani affirmed that “the government is following up this file through its security services and the Integrity Commission as a supervisory institution and the supporting security team, and is communicating with the competent court.”
The Prime Minister expressed his confidence in the court's success in its tasks, depending on the commitments made by the main accused in the case.
Al-Sudani indicated that there is a kind of complication that “faces the issue of recovering the sums, due to the diversity of these funds between assets and properties that need to be sold, especially since most of them are subject to seizure and there is difficulty in selling a seized property.”
He continued, “The other problem facing the court in the recovery process is that the main accused has given this money and distributed it to a group of banks and various personalities between the private sector.”
The prime minister pointed out that the competent judge “follows up with the accused, and there are orders issued to people who have so far refused to provide evidence of transferring sums to them, which are part of the theft.”
Al-Sudani stressed that the Iraqi government “will not give up holding the accused accountable, and at the same time we set our priorities to recover public money.”
He said, “These stolen funds are tax guarantees, because there are companies that may demand the tax authority for these deposits, and in this case the government will be forced to pay them from the state treasury.”
In addition, Al-Sudani announced that the Iraqi government opened today 42 schools in Baghdad Governorate, most of which are caravan schools, and the Baghdad Governorate plan for the year 2023 is to build 250 schools, in addition to the Iraqi-Chinese project to build 1,000 schools.
He continued, "We have a special project to end the obvious shortage of infrastructure and schools in all governorates through the fund, which is expected to be decided in the budget law."
With regard to food security, Al-Sudani said, "We have started implementing 192 projects in the governorates of Wasit, Karbala, and Basra, with about 10 trillion for all governorates."
He added, "These projects are scheduled to make a quantum leap in the level of services in Baghdad and other governorates, and they are closely monitored by the government through the Coordinating Body of Governors and follow-up committees."
