The government's decision is in the wind... Dealers price the dollar according to their whims and monopolize the markets

Although the government reduced the exchange rate of the dollar to 1,300 dinars per dollar two weeks ago, the price flames are still high for foodstuffs, and there is no difference in them so far.
Specialists attributed the lack of food prices to the fact that some monopolists of merchants kept the high prices unchanged, amid calls for the government and parliament to increase control over the exchange rates of the dollar in exchanges.
In this regard, the expert on economic affairs, Malath Al-Amin, stated that before the dollar prices fell, merchants imported goods in large quantities and at the old price of the dollar, which was above 160 thousand for every 100 dollars.
Al-Amin, in an exclusive interview with (Al-Mada), said that “the merchants, after setting a new price for the dollar by the Central Bank, agreed among themselves to keep the price of their goods high so that they would not suffer a loss, since they had bought their goods at the previous high price.” He pointed out that "market prices will return to stability after a period of about two weeks, and when the previous goods stored with merchants, which they bought at the high price, are finished."
On Tuesday (February 7, 2023), the Council of Ministers approved a decision to amend the exchange rate of the dollar to 1,300 dinars per dollar.
For her part, Member of Parliament Zainab Al-Moussawi confirmed that Parliament is constantly following the stability of market prices after the significant rise that occurred due to the price of the dollar.
Al-Moussawi said, in an exclusive interview with (Al-Mada), that “the central bank, after reducing the exchange rates of the dollar to 1300, assumes that the prices of commodities and foodstuffs, which have increased significantly recently, will decline, but some monopolists of foodstuffs are behind the continued rise in prices in the local market, and we are in turn.” As members of parliament, we will follow up on this issue with field teams and form oversight committees to hold accountable merchants who raise prices.”
The exchange rate of the Iraqi dinar had risen before the government's decision to more than 1,700 dinars per dollar, which greatly negatively affected the citizens' livelihood. In addition, Mahmoud Al-Nuaimi, the owner of a market in the Al-Alawi area, said that the rise in prices caused us great losses in terms of poor turnout by citizens. Al-Nuaimi said, in an exclusive interview with (Al-Mada), that “the price hike is still continuing despite the dollar’s price reduction to 1300, and the truth is that we do not know the secret in that, as merchants continue to sell at the previous high prices.”
Al-Nuaimi called on the government to “intensify control campaigns against wholesalers and monopolists of goods and foodstuffs, and hold them accountable, so that stability can return to the markets again.”
Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed, on Monday (February 20, 2023), that the Iraqi currency is strong and the goal of the visit to Washington was related to the economic sector, while indicating that the dollar crisis is on its way to a solution.
