The Council of Ministers has allocated nearly five billion dinars to implement the national program to remove radioactive contamination throughout the country, while the Ministry of Environment will start over the next year to clean up the last and most polluted sites nationwide.
The Director General of the Radiation Protection Center in the Ministry, Sabah Hassan Al-Husseini, said in a statement to “Al-Sabah”: The ministry succeeded in obtaining the approval of the Council of Ministers to allocate four billion and 929 million dinars to implement the national program to remove radioactive contamination throughout the country, according to the budget prepared by the supervisory and executive authorities. Competent.
And that this budget will contribute to the implementation of all activities and projects specified within the national program for the removal of radioactive contamination, with the aim of protecting citizens and the environment from the danger of radioactive pollution, which is the most dangerous threat to human life.
Al-Husseini stated that the center's plans are included in the program to declare Iraq free of radioactive contamination, and it is a positive and important step in the way of strengthening investment and urban plans to advance the national economy at all levels, except for the lack of financial allocations, the main obstacle to the center's work in the field of radioactive contamination removal.
He revealed that the national plan to remove radioactive contamination had achieved advanced levels, according to which Basra, Maysan and Muthanna were declared free of radioactive contamination, while the governorates of Dhi Qar and Anbar will soon join it, noting that the most polluted sites in the country that need a great effort to remove pollution are two. The sites of Adai and Al-Jazeera in Mosul, which are a landfill in which radioactive materials were buried, and the terrorist “ISIS” gangs excavated and scattered its contents when they seized the city.
The Director General of the Radiation Protection Center added that the center, in coordination with international organizations, succeeded in surrounding the pollution within the two aforementioned sites and including them in the national plan for decontamination, expecting work to start in 2024, while the decontamination work will take four to six months, to be the last sites to remove pollution.
