    Economy News - Baghdad

Iraq is classified among the countries that waste the most food, and this is related to the nature of social customs and traditions, as leftovers represent about 43% of the total waste in the country. Waste, and indicated that the quantities of leftovers from waste amount to 20 thousand tons per day throughout Iraq.
    food waste
The writer Ali Fahim describes the state of waste in the country by saying that it seems as if Iraq is a country of dramatic contradictions between the enormous wealth it possesses that has been hoarded in the hands of a certain class that has monopolized it, and the great poverty that afflicts its people.
In his speech, Fahim attributes the reasons for the increase in waste to the nature of the Iraqi individual, to which social pressures and popular heritage are added, as the Iraqi personality and its societal behavior are characterized by nomadism, as he put it.
Fahim points out that food is now served in very large dishes that exceed the need, and then the rest of the food is thrown away without any benefit, and he adds that these social traditions have established undisciplined behavioral phenomena whose consequences cannot be easily eliminated, stressing the need to spread societal and cultural awareness by launching programs Real to face the accumulated negatives, through the concerted efforts of government agencies and civil society organizations.
    economic effects
Experts warn of great economic repercussions on Iraq as a result of the wasted amounts of food, and the great efforts it requires to get rid of or recycle them. In this regard, economic expert Abd al-Rahman al-Mashhadani says that wasting food is part of the behaviors of Iraqi society under the name of honoring the guest, by cooking quantities Food that is more than the family needs on a continuous and daily basis, in anticipation of the arrival of unexpected guests or without a previous appointment.
Al-Mashhadani talks about the amounts of waste that are not small, which causes great losses, especially since Iraq imports all foodstuffs in huge amounts in light of the crisis of high global food prices, commenting, "If the amount of food wasted per day in Iraq (20 thousand tons) was calculated by the value of grain Of which the price per ton reaches 400 dollars, this means that Iraq loses more than 8 million dollars a day, in addition to other losses.
Based on the foregoing, Al-Mashhadani sees the need to enhance societal culture and include in school curricula how to deal with food, which has become a scarce commodity, with the aim of perpetuating life and preserving the rights of future generations, pointing out that religious events and millions of visits in the country annually contribute to wasting tons of surplus food leftovers. Which is thrown in the trash, according to him.
The problem of food waste is not limited to material losses, but rather warns of serious environmental consequences that threaten public health, as the environmental expert Ahmed Saleh Nehme considered that the high rates of wasted food waste in Iraq is one of the wrong behaviors and a manifestation of visual distortion in cities, especially as the infrastructure of municipalities It is not enough to absorb such large quantities of food waste and household waste.
The decomposition of this waste - as a result of high temperatures and humidity - may lead to the emission of methane and some toxins, in addition to the spread of harmful bacteria in the Iraqi environment, as Nima warns during his interview with Al-Jazeera Net.
And the matter does not stop at that, as throwing leftovers into rivers leads to increased water pollution and damage to biodiversity in terms of benign bacteria, fish eggs and other living organisms, and justifies the blessing of the spread of many diseases - especially respiratory, chest and skin diseases - due to waste and what results from it. He called for preserving the environment by recycling this waste and converting it into compost, which is included in agricultural fertilization and supplying the soil with beneficial nutrients.
    zero waste
As the problem worsened, the relevant government agencies revealed an ambitious waste disposal project. Issa Al-Fayyad, Director General of Technical Affairs at the Ministry of Environment, says that waste is a real problem for the governorates of Iraq in general, and Baghdad in particular, due to its large quantities and traditional methods of managing it.
He pointed out that the capital, Baghdad, dumps about 10,000 tons of waste per day, indicating that the need to treat this waste requires the implementation of the environmentally friendly "zero waste" project, suggesting that a good economic return will be achieved through the project, in addition to providing many job opportunities.
Al-Fayyad explains that the prospective project is in the process of preparing a feasibility study to find out all the information required for its implementation in terms of the amount and type of waste, the site of project implementation, the executing agency, the type of machinery used, the number of manpower, and others.
Al-Fayyad believes that the upcoming project is an important link within Iraq's strategy to combat climate change to reduce negative emissions, such as greenhouse gases and air pollutants, pointing to the continuation of consultations with the World Bank for the purpose of benefiting from international expertise and financing to ensure the success of the project.
