Baghdad / Obelisk Al-Hadath: Reports indicate an escalation of differences between the poor and the rich in Iraq. Where up to 20% of the population lives below the poverty line, while a very small percentage of the wealthy own about 25% of the national wealth.
Specialized social and economic sources attribute the reasons for this to the political and security unrest that has gripped the country since the US invasion in 2003, which affected the economy and caused a deterioration in the state of public services and infrastructure.
Serious class differences in Iraq are evident, with many Iraqis suffering from difficult economic conditions and living below the poverty line, while a few wealthy people own a large share of the wealth.
And the oil wealth in Iraq has contributed greatly to the creation of a broad aristocracy in the country, and it has to do with political influence.
And one of the social reasons for the class difference in Iraq is that many people suffer from a lack of education and vocational training, which affects their job opportunities and increases the lack of economic opportunities.
Compared to the major and developed industrial countries, the educational system in these countries is characterized by efficiency and flexibility, and provides wider opportunities for training and university education for the children of the poor.
Iraq suffers from corruption and exploitation, and this leads to a lack of fair distribution of wealth, negatively affects economic growth and increases poverty and unemployment.
And the Iraqi economic observer, Juma Al-Lami, who resides in Germany, says that Western countries have social and political systems that are more effective in combating corruption and exploitation, according to his experience in this field.
Iraq spends most of its public budgets on its operational department, which results in less spending on basic social services such as health care, education and housing.
In the experiences of developed countries, the distribution of resources occurs in a more balanced way, and is spent on social services and human development more.
Western countries have high technical and technological capabilities, which allows them to innovate and develop, and this provides ample opportunities for employment of the poor classes and their rise to the highest ranks.
And many official, academic and research reports and studies discuss the issue of poverty in Iraq, while international, governmental and non-governmental organizations such as the United Nations, the World Bank and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees are working to issue periodic reports on the economic and social situation in Iraq, and highlight issues of poverty, social discrimination and challenges Iraqis face it in order to achieve justice and equality.
These reports indicate that a large proportion of the Iraqi population lives below the poverty line, while many areas suffer from malnutrition and lack of health and education services and infrastructure. At the same time, reports also indicate that there is a small segment of the rich in Iraq, and these rich people enjoy enormous wealth that far exceeds the average income of poor families in the country.
No accurate statistics are available on the proportion of wealthy people in Iraq. However, there are indications that the rich own a large proportion of the national wealth compared to the poor majority of Iraqi society.
Some reports indicate that there has been an intensification of foreign immigration of wealth holders in Iraq in recent years, which has contributed to the worsening of the social and economic situation in the country and the high rates of poverty and homelessness.
And data on individual wealth in Iraq and the distribution of wealth may be difficult to determine accurately due to the lack of official and reliable studies detailing this subject completely.
