Today, Wednesday, Iraq and Turkey opened a new border crossing between the two countries, within the Kurdistan region, which will be designated in its first phase for travelers and then for the purposes of commercial exchange, to be the second crossing between the two countries after the Ibrahim Al-Khalil crossing, the main one designated for trade and transportation of travelers between the two countries.
The step of opening the new land crossing represents a new indication of the two countries' efforts to develop trade exchange, especially with regard to the food and building materials sector, as the volume of trade exchange between them during the first quarter of this year amounted to nearly $3 billion, according to the data of the Turkish Statistical Authority, most of which are merchandise. Turkish supplier to Iraq.
Last month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani announced the "Development Road Project", which extends from Basra on the Gulf waters to Turkey, making Iraq a major passage to the European continent and significantly reducing the time for transporting goods and shipments to it.
The new land port is located in the north of Erbil Governorate, within the Soran border area with Turkey.
The inauguration took place during a ceremony attended by a number of local officials in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, most notably Mulla Mustafa Barzani, brother of the head of the regional government, Masrour Barzani, and the governor of Erbil, Omid Khoshnaw.
The district commissioner of the Iraqi border region of Soran, Ghafoor Ahmed, said in a speech during the opening ceremony of the crossing, that "the Kurdistan region will witness an economic and tourism boom, and it will also provide job opportunities for the citizens of the region, especially for the people of the areas near the crossing."
In turn, the director of the municipality of Soran Halkurd Sheikh Najeeb said, in a press conference after the opening ceremony, that the port will be allocated initially for the tourist movement and will be expanded later, and converted to use as a commercial port as well, indicating that the opening of the port took place in the presence of personalities from both countries.

He emphasized "the strong social relations between the people of the neighboring Iraqi and Turkish regions on the borders of the two countries," which "will be strengthened through the opening of this border crossing that facilitates the movement of movement between the two sides," he said.
According to Sheikh Najeeb, the official outlet will be available from today for travel and tourism purposes.
The port bears the name (Zeit) on the Iraqi side, while on the Turkish side its name is "Karana border crossing."
