Baghdad / Obelisk Al-Hadath: An American report confirmed the ineffectiveness of the Iraqi F-16 aircraft due to the failure to provide them with the appropriate missiles, pointing out that the Russian aircraft could not be used in the face of the terrorist organization ISIS due to the repercussions of the Ukrainian war.
A report by the American (Forbes) magazine stated that "Iraq's American combat aircraft (F-16) can be effective and effective if the country is provided with air-to-air missiles (AIM-120)."
The report continued, "This has not happened yet, which greatly reduces its combat value in Iraqi airspace."
He pointed out, "The US Office of the Inspector General stated that the Iraqi (F-16) aircraft are the country's main combat aircraft against the terrorist organization ISIS and the defense of Iraqi airspace."
At the same time, the report emphasized that “the country still relies on coalition sources for its intelligence in the field of surveillance and reconnaissance due to the limited capabilities of aircraft and the failure to provide the country with technological capabilities that would enable it to rely on itself in this field.”
He added, "In 2021, Iraq relied on its fleet of (Cessna) aircraft, along with the Czech (159) aircraft, and only unguided general-purpose bombs were dropped."
The report added, however, that "the country uses only Russian (Su-25) planes primarily for training, but it can only carry unguided missiles and bombs."
And he continues, “The Office of the Inspector General, which covers in its report the first quarter of 2023, indicated that Iraq did not use any of its Russian aircraft in anti-ISIS operations, in fact, due to the blockade imposed on Russian spare parts and equipment.”
The report indicated that "the United States has provided Iraq with only medium-range (IIM-7) semi-active radar-guided (air-to-air) missiles."
He believes that "this greatly limited the usefulness of the (F-16) aircraft for air defense to a large extent."
The report went on, "The Office of the Inspector General indicated that these missiles remain a concern due to malfunctioning guidance devices that lack replacement parts and vendors capable of performing repairs."
The spokesman for the Joint Operations Command, Tahsin Al-Khafaji, said in statements that “the air force possesses advanced aircraft that are present in most developed countries, in addition to the presence of advanced transport and training aircraft as well.”
He added, "Owning the aviation fleet depends on the money allocation factor, given that the air force is one of the most expensive weapons in all armies of the world," noting that "it is not easy to build weapons over a short period, but rather it needs a period of time with high financial allocations."
