Agriculture demands the activation of licenses for importing frozen materials

The Ministry of Agriculture called for the reactivation of licenses for the import of frozen and canned foodstuffs, which were suspended three years ago, calling for the development of quarries to enable them to perform their tasks.
Meanwhile, an economic expert called on the Ministry of Agriculture to intervene urgently to control the prices of major foodstuffs, which have witnessed a significant increase in local markets.
Director of the Quarries Department in the Veterinary Department of the Ministry, Dr. Saad Sahib Waheed, said in a statement to “Al-Sabah”: The government had decided three years ago to allow the private sector to import food and goods without restricting the import license, with the exception of the import of calves, ornamental birds, and veterinary medicines.
He added that his department does not grant import approval to the merchant, except on the condition that the license conforms to the available international conditions and standards, and the epidemiological situation of countries where epidemics are widespread, the most important of which are bird flu, bluetongue and rinderpest, noting that countries in which infectious disease hotspots are widespread are periodically listed by adopting the website Animal Health Organization.
Waheed stated that Iraq’s import of veal meat is distributed among Armenia, Brazil, and Colombia, which are free of cross-border diseases, stressing that imports from Iran are prohibited because it does not publish the epidemiological situation on the organization’s website when its disease hotspots spread.
He stated that although the Ministry of Agriculture owns 22 veterinary quarries at the border crossings, which are supposed to conduct physical examinations of meat, dairy, slaughtered chickens, and table eggs in refrigerators, they suffer from outdation, and most of them are small rooms made of sandwich panels and are not suitable for veterinarians to stay in, and lack automation. Electronically, in addition to the lack of shelter stations at the border crossings for live animals that are quarantined for 21 days before their entry, what is currently being done is that the importer brings a quarantine certificate from the country of origin, which lacks credibility, stressing that the responsible authorities have been asked several times to qualify all stations through... investors, but to no avail.
In a different context, and in response to the recent rise in food prices in local markets, especially table eggs, red and white meat, economic expert Mustafa Hantoush called on the responsible authorities to intervene urgently and open imports as a temporary solution to control the rise in prices.
He stated in a statement to “Al-Sabah”: The Ministry of Agriculture has the agricultural calendar to know the local production capacity for each item, the percentage that can be provided from it, and the market’s need for it, with the importance of controlling the rhythm of prices, taking into account the conditions of the poor class and contributing to controlling the steady rise that occurs from time to time. He appealed to the relevant government authorities to instruct the Ministry of Agriculture to open imports for a certain period of time as a temporary solution to create a balance process through the local product and the market’s need to know the numbers and quantities required to control the rise in prices caused by the private sector and some merchants.
