The Secretary-General of the Federation of Iranian Food Companies, Kaveh Zarkaran, announced on Saturday the suspension of exports of sweets and chocolate to Iraq.
In an interview with the Iranian newspaper Doniay Eqtesad, Zarkaran said, “Iranian exports to Iraq faced several problems during the past week, noting that Iraq is considered one of the most important and influential markets.”
He added, "Iraqi merchants suspended their purchases and exports of croissants, cocoa cake, and jelly from Iran for several reasons."
The Vice President of the Federation of Iranian Food Companies, Mohammad Reza Ghafar Allahi, explained that “political events have no role in stopping these exports, but rather this decision was issued by the Iraqis to support national production.”
He pointed out that "the lack of sweets and chocolate production in Iraq keeps hope alive that Iran's exports of these products to Iraq will resume soon."
It is noteworthy that, on Saturday last week, the Iraqi General Authority of Customs issued new instructions regarding the import of foodstuffs, in line with Resolution of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers No. 23571 of 2023.
The authority’s instructions included prohibiting the import of all types of cakes (stuffed and non-stuffed), and prohibiting the import of all types of pies, including (local pies with cheese, chicken, Nestle, butter, vegetables, fruits, fish, or chocolate), in addition to prohibiting the import of all types of unsalted croissants. Sweetened and stuffed with Nestle, Nutella, butter or cheese, and banning the import of all types of penne four and kulija with all fillings, and banning the import of all types of pizza and samosas stuffed with vegetables, meat and cheese.
