, despite the presence of thousands of private sector factories throughout Iraq, have been idle for twenty years, causing the loss of hundreds of thousands of job opportunities, and the waste of billions of dollars, which were pumped into random imports of inferior goods, in addition to eating away at the country’s budgets by relying on the public sector, but This year witnessed serious attempts to restore work in some of them and attract the Iraqi workforce, after a painful death in the private sector for more than twenty years, during which thousands of factories and laboratories stopped.
The return to operation of suspended factories has begun to move gradually after the recent government directives to activate the local industry, as those concerned anticipate a growing indicator in this field, after registering more than a thousand new projects within the corridors of the Iraqi Federation of Industries.
Clear industrial activity
Member of the Federation’s Board of Directors, Mohamed Abdel Mohamed, said, “During the first quarter of this year, we registered new projects whose number exceeded a thousand projects, and we also witnessed the re-registration and renewal of projects amounting to about 3,000 other projects.”
He added, "The total number of projects registered with us in the Federation of Industries exceeds 64,000 projects, but most of them have unfortunately stopped during the past twenty years, due to the wars and events the country has witnessed." Muhammad pointed out that "the industrial movement is now witnessing clear activity and all indicators appear good for the return of the private sector, so that it can take its space and presence as a support for building the country and covering its needs for goods and services."
good results
Economists believe that the private sector has become more ready to enter the labor market, compete with importers, and provide various goods and products, if government support for this sector continues, in addition to its ability to alleviate the burdens of the government and the public sector by attracting thousands of workers and providing employment opportunities. Mudar Abdullah, a researcher in economic affairs, explained, for his part, that “the Iraqi private sector has the readiness and readiness to work and achieve great and good results,” adding, “I expect that if support for this sector continues at this pace, the year 2024 will be the year of the private sector.” He added, "Although the previous governments were unfortunately fighting this sector through arbitrary and unjust measures, the current Prime Minister was the one who opened this outlet to support and revive the industrial sector in particular, and national production in general, and we have achieved good results so far," as he put it.
Thousands of closed factories and laboratories were converted, most of them into abandoned spaces or warehouses to accumulate imported goods.
Industry is the identity of the country
Economist Muhammad Samir says: “With regard to Iraqi factories, they are stopped for many reasons, and the most important of these reasons is the legal aspect, as many of these factories were suffering from legal obstacles, especially the fuel tariff law and the electric energy consumption law.”
He pointed out that "a quarter of production revenues go to providing electrical energy, despite the issuance of many Cabinet decisions by previous governments to unify electricity tariffs, but they were not adhered to."
Samir added, "There are serious moves and steps to support the Iraqi industry, by the current government, which is considered a sponsor of the private sector and driving the industry forward, as life has returned to about 3,150 small and medium factories, all of which contribute national products and provide decent job opportunities." Alleviate the existing unemployment situation.
Muhammad Samir added, "It is wrong for the Ministry of Industry to close these factories that have the capacity to employ one to two million employees. If they were properly exploited, this would lead to real industrial development, because industry is the identity of a country."
Orientation to investment
Perhaps liberating the national economy from the dominance of oil as the sole source of income, supporting the private sector, and encouraging local and foreign investment are among the most prominent economic tasks with strategic dimensions. Parliament’s latest step was to vote on the Social Security Law, which is considered one of the most important encouraging steps for the growth of the private sector, according to those concerned.
Industry specialists believe that the best solution to reviving factories and factories is to offer them for investment, so that the private sector can rehabilitate and operate them again. Over the past years, successive Iraqi governments have launched several initiatives to restart stalled factories and factories, but some of them were just ink on paper, and those could not Initiatives are to revive these factories or even restore the health of industries in Iraq.
