Finland pledges to support and protect the marshes

The Finnish Ambassador to Baghdad, Annu Saarela, pledged to provide support and protection for the marshes of southern Iraq, which represent a unique habitat for biodiversity in the region and the world.
The head of the Agriculture, Water and Marshlands Committee in the Dhi Qar Governorate Council, Zainab Al-Asadi, told Al-Sabah: The Finnish ambassador and her accompanying delegation visited the central marshes areas of Al-Fhud, Al-Manar and Al-Jabaish, and the ambassador promised to support the local residents and buffalo breeders who have suffered during the past years from water scarcity in their areas. .
Al-Asadi explained that the ambassador revealed a multiple support plan aimed at creating job opportunities for residents in the marshes areas in cooperation with the Finnish government, which will undertake the sending of Finnish tourists on multiple trips to the marshes, indicating that Finnish support includes other aspects, most notably the creation of projects that limit climate changes that are affected. It contains marsh areas and causes the migration of its population.
She confirmed that the local government exchanged ideas with the Finnish side regarding multiple projects to support the residents of the marshes, especially buffalo breeders and fishermen, as well as paying attention to women in the marshes.
She pointed out that Finland has shown its full support in international forums for preserving the marshes, which were added to the World Heritage List about nine years ago, and strongly stood by the Iraqi government by holding the upstream countries responsible for preserving the marshes in southern Iraq.
