    [ltr]Information/ report[/ltr]
[ltr]Everyone inside Iraq and Turkey is excited and anticipating the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who wants to complete the agreement with Iraq on the development path that will boost Turkish imports and get them out of the economic crisis they are experiencing.[/ltr]
[ltr]Iraqis eagerly look at this visit to reach an effective agreement with Turkey on Iraq's water share, which, if concluded, will rid Iraq of the drought crisis that hits it every summer, and will significantly boost agriculture.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Turkish president is scheduled to visit Baghdad for talks with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on the development route that enters from Baghdad via Europe from Turkish territory.[/ltr]
[ltr]In May 2023, Iraq launched a bold infrastructure project spanning all its territory, linking the Grand Port of Faw on the Arabian Gulf with Turkey through rail and road networks. This $17 billion development road would form a new link between Asia and Europe.[/ltr]
[ltr]The blueprint was the main topic of discussion at a one-day conference in Baghdad, attended by transport ministers and officials from the Gulf Cooperation Council, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Syria and Jordan.[/ltr]
[ltr]The goal of the development path is to transform Iraq's transportation infrastructure after decades of conflict have damaged road and rail networks. This has not only affected people's mobility, but has also exacerbated the cost of trade and trade, impeding the international and regional movement of goods and services.[/ltr]
[ltr]According to the Iraqi government, the project will officially begin in 2024 and span three phases until 2050.[/ltr]
[ltr]Demands were raised to the Sudanese to take advantage of this visit and force Erdogan to comply with Iraq's right to water.[/ltr]
[ltr]A member of the Agriculture and Water Committee, MP Thaer Al-Jubouri, stressed on Friday the need to invest in the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq, to negotiate to secure Iraq's water share.[/ltr]
[ltr]Al-Jubouri told Al-Maalouma that "Iraq was exposed to a major water crisis last summer, and a drought occurred in some of its areas, which led to the decline of agriculture and the impact on livestock."[/ltr]
[ltr]He stressed the need to "take advantage of Erdogan's visit to ensure the security of water shares in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and to agree on a specific share of Turkey."[/ltr]
[ltr]He pointed out that "everyone bears responsibility for the water file, despite the blessing of rain that fell on the country, but the file must be given priority and not tolerated at all."[/ltr]
[ltr]For his part, sources inside Iraq confirmed that the recent rains and torrential rains have raised the Iraqi water reserve, but they are not enough for Iraq to pass from next summer without drought.[/ltr]
[ltr]A government official revealed on Wednesday an increase in the storage of Lake Hamrin in Diyala province by 15%.[/ltr]
[ltr]The director of Saadia district (60 km northeast of Baqubah) Ahmed Zarkoshi said in an interview with Al-Maalouma that "Lake Hamrin east of Saadia is the lifeline in Diyala, especially as it is the main feeder for rivers and streams that provide water to more than one million people."[/ltr]
[ltr]He added, "The storage of Lake Hamrin has increased by 15%, but it remains within the worrying limits, meaning that we have not crossed the red lines because the summer season needs larger quantities of water to meet the needs of the people and crops."[/ltr]
[ltr]He pointed out that "hopes are focused on the next rain waves to raise the storage of Lake Hamrin to greater levels depending on the flowing torrents."[/ltr]
[ltr]The reservoir of Lake Hamrin at the peak is more than two billion and 400 million m3 and is located on the Diyala River and constitutes the province's strategic reservoir of water.[/ltr]
