Baghdad is a major focus in the electricity crisis that has been going on for years, as the capital’s consumption reaches approximately 45% of the country’s total energy production. By examining these numbers carefully, we find that approximately 60% of it goes for air conditioning purposes, which has called for specialists to propose innovative solutions. To eliminate the waste and extravagance practiced by the citizen, which leads to the continuation of the electricity crisis, among these solutions is requiring construction companies to construct their buildings according to specific environmental regulations, as well as dispensing with the paving of muqarnas on street islands with shade plants that help reduce temperatures.
The head of the “Osool” Foundation for Economic and Sustainable Development, Khaled Al-Jabri, stated in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “the numbers show that the waste of energy consumption is mainly represented by the use of air conditioning systems, and there are main reasons behind this, including poor construction quality and lack of Control by the competent authorities, and allowing the continued presence of many divisions in housing units, which increases the demand for cooling.”
He added, "If construction processes, approvals, and permits were controlled, the demand for energy would decrease, which would reduce the pressure on generation operations." He explained that "the Baghdad Municipality - as the official body in monitoring and issuing permits and regulations - still needs more continuous monitoring and approval." "More on consulting offices, using approved models in construction companies, and leaving the current construction chaos, in order to ensure the implementation of the standard systems necessary to preserve heat and prevent its leakage through fully insulated walls and windows."
He continued, "It is necessary to realize that every new home encourages the consumption of electrical energy, and as this process continues, the Ministry of Electricity will find itself in dire need of expanding generation operations." Al-Jabri saw that "poor landscaping and furnishing of streets in terms of shade trees that generate A shade cover helps reduce street heat reflected on buildings; it would increase the demand for air conditioning and be a major cause of generating the heat island phenomenon that transfers the city’s atmosphere from the urban environment to the desert environment,” calling on the “Baghdad Municipality to pay attention to this issue and not plant palm trees inside.” The central carrots or paving them with muqarnas, but rather adopting (Albizia) trees of the first or second type or (Acacia) of all types for the purpose of raising the shade ceiling in the city of Baghdad, and the main purpose of this is to reduce energy consumption.”
Al-Jabri pointed out, “Hence, we must move towards effective solutions, as well as setting environmentally friendly standards for all buildings that prove their effectiveness in conserving energy.” He added, “It is also necessary to direct executive companies to adopt environmentally friendly buildings and use technologies that reduce... Electrical consumption,” explaining that “with these steps, Iraq can advance towards achieving its goals of environmental sustainability and reducing pressure on the electrical system, thus improving the quality of life for citizens and promoting sustainable development in the country.”
For his part, the head of the Regional Center for Studies, Ali Al-Sahib, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: “Iraq is suffering from a real crisis in the electricity sector, despite the amount of money spent on production and even imports, and there is also a severe shortage in the amount of water present and entering the water.” Iraq".
He stated, “With the worsening of the two crises and the growing need for them, we are witnessing at the same time a major overrun and waste on the two networks (water and electricity), which are in fact the lifeblood of the citizen, but misuse and a lack of sense of responsibility - if not patriotism - led to a decline in the electrical system in its supply hours, in addition to “The scarcity of water has negatively affected the lives of citizens.”
He stressed that "it is not fair to place all the blame on state institutions - even if they are primarily responsible for equipment - as rationalizing electrical energy and not overusing water are borne by the citizen, whose sense of duty towards many aspects of the crisis has declined."
life".
Al-Sahib pointed out that “rationalization of consumption is directly proportional to the service provided by the state in fulfilling the citizen’s necessities. Water and electricity are the backbone of life. Therefore, preserving the integrity of the networks and not overusing them is a legal and moral duty that should not be neglected under any name or title.”
