Baghdad consumes nearly 50% of electricity production

Khalid Al-Jabri, head of the Osool Organization for Economic Development, called for changing construction methods to be in harmony with environmental changes and rising temperatures during the summer, pointing out that modern buildings in most countries of the world do not consume large amounts of electrical energy compared to Iraq.
Al-Jaberi said that the city of Baghdad currently consumes more than 50% of the production, and the deficit has risen to 18 megawatts, at a time when solutions are available and need to be activated and followed up by the relevant authorities.
“The total electricity consumption in Iraq goes mainly to residential and government buildings, not to industrial, agricultural or any other type of production,” he added, explaining that Baghdad is characterized by the presence of a large number of buildings, homes, complexes and universities, and we expect to witness significant and continuous increases as more of these buildings enter service frequently. To confirm this, we can imagine the number of residential units on Al-Muthanna Airport Street alone. This phenomenon is repeated in cities that are witnessing rapid urban development and clear growth, such as Basra, Karbala, Anbar, Mosul and others.

He pointed out that the responsibility does not lie with the Ministry of Electricity alone, but rather the Baghdad Municipality bears great responsibilities in this regard, as it is the entity that controls the services and development of the city that consumes the most electricity in Iraq.
Al-Jabri believes that “any building permit issued in Baghdad, whether it is a residential complex, a house, a commercial building, or a tourist building, is considered a significant increase in electricity consumption, or more precisely, it is an obstacle to providing electricity in a sustainable manner. The reasons behind this are many, such as architectural designs that are outside of international standards and controls, working without a consultant, lighting, air conditioning units and their distribution, insulators, sun falls, the city’s shade cover, and other specific matters, each of which has a simple and easy solution that only requires a decision-making authority and follow-up.”
As for the economic expert, Murtada Al-Khafaji, he said that the world has witnessed development in the reality of construction, and there are now advanced methods that are consistent with global trends in building environmentally friendly cities that are consistent with the climate changes that the world is witnessing.
He pointed out that Iraq needs a huge construction volume in all areas of the country, which requires us to adopt advanced construction methods that do not require the consumption of large electrical energy, but rather we must adopt smart construction methods that are used in countries living in a close reality.

He pointed out that the concerned institutions must move towards adopting advanced construction methods that do not require consuming large amounts of electrical energy, and that the implementing companies must be obligated to move towards this type of building.
