Economist on congestion relief projects: Alternative methods are the solution

Economic researcher Abdul Salam Hassan confirmed that the government's congestion relief projects will not be sufficient for the purpose, indicating that the solution lies in creating alternative roads.
Strategic expert Abdel Salam Hassan says, “The period during which the congestion relief projects are completed, in addition to the projects that have not been completed yet, was not well calculated.” Pointing out, “There are ten projects at the beginning and end of one and they last for two or three years, and the problem is not only this matter, but that these projects have not served their purpose of relieving street congestion,” noting, “There is a continuation of opening the import of cars and the like ( Steroids, taxis, and motorcycles) and there is no correct programming.”
Hassan added in an interview with Al Mada, “The solution lies in inventing new roads. Bridges cannot be erected over the streets, as bridges may be erected in front of obstacles such as rivers and others. But if new roads are invented by removing a building and compensating the owner of the building or the obstacle.” On the road, there is therefore a programming of reality at the expense of eliminating congestion.” He warned that “projects to relieve traffic congestion have not achieved their goals, and these goals do not exceed 20% by achieving them, and thus street congestion will remain as it is.”
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani launched in 2023 a first package to relieve traffic congestion in Baghdad through 16 projects related to the development of roads and bridges as the first of their kind in the country, the most prominent of which is opening roads that had been closed for years, removing a large number of security checkpoints, and opening streets in... Downtown, and within the green zone.
