The Ministry of Transport announced the opening of 36 mass transit lines so far, and while it confirmed that it plans to open 72 lines throughout Baghdad, it revealed plans to implement the national taxi and electronic meter projects.
The director of the media office in the ministry, Maytham Al-Safi, said in an interview with Al-Zawraa: The public transportation fare is 500 dinars. Stating: During the year 2023, we opened 28 lines, and this year so far we have opened 8 lines, meaning 36 lines are currently operating in Baghdad, and our goal is to reach 72 lines.
He added: 72 lines will include all of Baghdad, and with the parties according to the established plan, stressing: We opened lines in the universities as well as on the outskirts of Baghdad, where at the University of Baghdad we have 30 buses.
Regarding the ministry’s plans, Al-Safi indicated that the ministry is planning to activate the national taxi project, which is an electronic application that is very similar to the application used for private companies with the addition of a database and an information intersection, and contributes to excluding interlopers in the taxi profession who have jobs or another source of work from the profession. Taxi. As for the issue of the meter, Al-Safi stated: There were advanced procedures at the Ministry of Transport regarding the implementation of this project.
He explained: We had a meeting with the institutions concerned with the issue, such as the Traffic Department, the local government in Baghdad, and other institutions that have a connection. Confirming that a decision has been taken to postpone the matter now due to the heavy traffic in Baghdad, and this will cause a problem for the taxi driver.
He continued: The Ministry wanted the issue to mature by launching the national taxi project as a first step, after which there would be the possibility of activating the meter to be attached to the national taxi project to achieve integration within unified procedures.
For its part, the General Company for Transporting Passengers and Delegations in the Ministry of Transport confirmed the opening of two mass transit lines between the holy cities of Al-Hurriya and Al-Kadhimiya next week, while indicating the intention to open more lines in densely populated areas.
The company’s director, Karim Kazem Hussein, said in a press statement: “As currently planned, two mass transit lines will be opened next week in the Al-Hurriya area towards the Al-Kadhimiya area.”
He added, "The number of lines departing from this region towards other regions will also be increased with the completion of the opening of the Aden Square bridges, which have reached their final stages."
He continued, "Also, work is continuing to open a mass transit line in the Shula area, as well as expanding the number of lines being opened in Sadr City. We are currently targeting densely populated areas and then covering the areas in Baghdad."
