The head of the Strategic Center for Human Rights, Fadel Al-Gharawi, confirmed that there has been progress in confronting crime in Iraq, as it ranked 80th out of 148 countries in the global crime index, with a safety index of 55.3%.
A statement from the center, received by Al-Mada, said: “The head of the Strategic Center for Human Rights, Dr. Fadel Al-Gharawi, confirmed that there has been progress made in confronting crime by the executive, judicial and security authorities, with an improvement and safety index rate of 55.3%.”
Al-Gharawi added, “Iraq ranks 80 out of 148 countries in the global crime index.”
Al-Gharawi continued, “Iraq ranks eighth in the Arab world in the crime index for the current year, after Syria with 69.1%, Yemen second with 68.6%, Libya third with 60.4%, Algeria fourth with 52.2%, Egypt fifth with 47.3%, and Morocco sixth with 46.5%.” Lebanon is seventh with 46.4%. Iraq ranked eighth with 44.7%.
He stressed that “the most important crimes spread in Iraq are drug crimes, human trafficking, murders, kidnappings, suicides, sexual crimes, terrorist crimes, property laundering crimes, theft crimes, and financial corruption crimes, in addition to violations and misdemeanors, which are distributed throughout the governorates.”
He continued, “The government’s policy and the efforts of the judiciary and security services all contributed to achieving the progress achieved in improving the crime index from sixth place in 2023 to eighth place in 2024 at the Arab level.”
According to the statement, Al-Gharawi called on “the government, parliament, and security services to launch a national policy to combat crime, address all problems that lead to high crime rates, such as economic aspects, social and political problems, and psychological repercussions, amend penal laws with alternative penalties instead of crime-negative penalties, and designate the year 2030 as an Iraqi year free of crime.”
