    Baghdad Today - Tehran
Sources in the Iranian Ministry of Interior revealed, today, Saturday (July 27, 2024), that Tehran has not yet reached an agreement with Baghdad regarding the entry of Pakistani visitors to Iraq to participate in the Arbaeen pilgrimage.
The sources told Baghdad Today that "the Iranian authorities have provided the necessary infrastructure for the entry of Pakistani Arbaeen visitors into the country through the border crossings of Sistan and Baluchestan province in southeastern Iran," adding, "We have not yet reached an agreement with Iraq regarding the entry of Pakistanis."
Regarding the Iranian authorities’ expectations regarding the number of Pakistani visitors, she said, “We expect approximately 42,000 Pakistani visitors to arrive through the Mirjaveh border crossing between the two countries, and if there is necessary cooperation between the two countries (Iran and Pakistan), we expect 100,000 Pakistani visitors to arrive during the Arbaeen pilgrimage.”
When asked about the Iranian authorities’ fears that Pakistani visitors will not return if the Arbaeen pilgrimage ends, Iranian Interior Ministry sources said, “We reject the continued presence of any Iranian or foreign citizen who enters Iraq through Iranian territory in this country illegally.”
She added, "We share the Iraqi authorities' fear of the presence of this large number of visitors, as it was announced that 50,000 Pakistani visitors had disappeared in Iraq."
Pakistani Minister of Religious Affairs, Chaudhry Hussain, made a shocking announcement when he announced the disappearance of 50,000 of his citizens in Iraq, prompting the Baghdad government to quickly open an investigation into their disappearance during their visit to religious shrines in the country on the occasion of the month of Muharram.
The Pakistani newspaper "Al-Umma" quoted Hussain as saying that a large number of Pakistani visitors have disappeared in Iraq during the past years, indicating that "the Islamabad government is taking steps to verify people who travel abroad through illegal means."
The Standing Committee on Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony of the Pakistani Parliament was informed that about 50,000 Pakistani pilgrims have disappeared in Iraq so far.
As a result, the committee proposed a “new policy for pilgrimages to holy places in different countries,” including Iraq, and it has been sent to the federal cabinet for approval.
In turn, the Pakistani newspaper "Akhbar Al-Alam" revealed that Pakistani passports are collected and seized from Iraqis at border crossings, before they are organized into convoys divided into 136 groups.
