Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: Iraq has recently witnessed a noticeable escalation in crime rates, especially murders, in conjunction with the spread of the phenomenon of gun control among civilians.
This situation raises concerns among Iraqi citizens and raises questions about the role of the security authorities, especially the Ministry of Interior, in reducing this dangerous phenomenon.
Yesterday, a bloody tribal conflict broke out in Najaf Governorate in Iraq, resulting in the death and injury of dozens. They were transferred to hospitals in Najaf and Kufa to receive treatment. The situation remains tense and the number of casualties may increase as the conflict continues.
Official statistics indicate a noticeable increase in murder rates in Iraq during 2023 compared to the previous year. Studies also indicate the spread of the phenomenon of illegal carrying of weapons among civilians, which contributes significantly to the exacerbation of the crime problem. Until now.
Clan conflicts are linked to historical, social, economic and political conflicts and tensions over lands and tribal affiliation.
The increase in crime rates in Iraq is attributed to the spread of the phenomenon of illegal carrying of weapons among civilians, the lack of citizens’ confidence in the security and judicial services, the high rates of unemployment and poverty, the weakness of the social and economic infrastructure, the effects of the wars and conflicts that Iraq has experienced, and the spread of the phenomenon of corruption in State institutions.
The Ministry of Interior has a primary responsibility to reduce the phenomenon of crime in Iraq, to impose the rule of law, spread security and stability throughout the country, pursue criminals, bring them to justice, and confiscate illegal weapons from civilians.
The leader of the Al-Hikma Movement, Fahd Al-Jubouri, said that the rampage of weapons, killings, and many criminal incidents that have recently reached significant levels inside Iraq are a source of concern and questions about the role of the (million-man) security agencies, the most important of which is the Interior Ministry.
He added: What is happening is absolutely unacceptable, and everyone must take action to put an end to this lawlessness.
