The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities announced the recovery of 181 artifacts that had been smuggled during different previous periods, and received them with official ceremonies.
The ministry said in a statement, "181 artifacts that had been smuggled during different previous periods were received during the signing ceremony of a receipt document between the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, Ahmed Fakak Al-Badrani, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, in the presence of the Chairman of the Antiquities and Heritage Authority, Ali Obaid Shalgam, and the Director of the Museums Department at the Authority, Lama Al-Douri, at the headquarters of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry."
She added, “Iraq announced the recovery of this batch of artifacts during the recent visit of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to the United States, and they were returned on the presidential plane to Baghdad. The artifacts recovered from the United States include a bronze piece in the shape of a man, and eight metal boxes containing skeletons that were smuggled from Iraq to the American city of Los Angeles in the nineties of the last century from the Nimrud site in Nineveh Governorate, without successive governments claiming them since that time.”
Al-Badrani stressed “the ministry’s ongoing efforts to follow up on smuggled Iraqi antiquities and pursue them in many countries in order to recover them and preserve them from tampering and vandalism, after long periods of instability that were penetrated by these smuggling operations, especially since Iraq is rich in archaeological sites in all its governorates.”
According to the statement, the collection also included “other artifacts from different historical eras, recovered from the American city of Washington, and the countries of Jordan, Norway, Germany, and Britain.”
