Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Interior revealed, on Sunday, that an international conference to combat drugs will be held in the capital, Baghdad, on July 22.
The ministry's spokesman, Brigadier General Muqdad Miri, said during a press conference attended by Shafak News Agency, "Our efforts in the field of combating drugs are continuing in several aspects. The first aspect is the awareness and education process, and the second aspect is international cooperation."
"We cooperate with all the countries in our geographical neighbourhood and others, as this crime is a cross-border crime, so we have expanded our operations in this regard and we have many agreements," Miri explained.
He added: "On July 22, there will be an important conference in Baghdad related to drug crime at the level of interior ministers from neighboring and non-neighboring countries, who will come to Baghdad to participate in this conference," explaining, "In our last visit to Kuwait, the drug file was one of the most important files that were discussed."
Miri explained that during the past six months, the Iraqi Interior Ministry was able to seize narcotic substances in a total quantity of 1 ton and 822 kilograms, and these substances included crystal, tramol, hashish, opium, heroin, and cocaine, which showed a 4% decrease in drug crimes compared to the first six months of last year, and 7,705 suspects were arrested in the field of drug crimes.
Regarding legal rulings, Miri explained that 1,435 drug dealers were arrested, in addition to 198 defendants in other legal cases, and 147 international dealers during the first six months of the year, indicating that the total number of rulings issued against convicts during this period amounted to 72 death sentences and 119 life sentences for drug dealers, compared to only five death sentences in previous years, indicating significant progress in the efforts of the Iraqi Ministry of Interior to combat drugs.
